You are here: Home >> Summer

What is the Main Event?

A dynamic student gathering of over 1,000 teenagers meeting weekly during the summer months.  An event filled with lights, engaging music, skits, and relevant gospel teaching where gifted communicators share the powerful reality of a relationship with Jesus Christ on a weekly basis. You’ve got to experience it to believe it!

If you would like to assure that your group can sit together, we will save you seats in the back half of Strickland Auditorium. Call the GP office the week before, and let us know how many seats you want saved. If your seats are not occupied by 7:45 pm, we will open these up to the general public. Without reservations, seats will be available first come, first serve.  Each week we are going to leave the front few rows for kids who come without a youth group. Our air conditioned tent will be cooled off and ready for your group by 6:00pm, if you want to get to Epworth early and hang out.

The Main Event takes place during the summer on Sunday nights at Strickland Auditorium at Epworth-by-the-Sea on St. Simons Island. The Doors open at 7pm and the Main Event begins at 8:35pm. ****MAIN EVENT IS A FREE EVENT****

Summer 2012

June 10 Speaker - Shelly Griffin

Shelly Griffin, formerly, Shelly Bland, grew up in Brunswick, Georgia. She attended Brunswick High School and graduated in 2001. At the age of 15, she joined The Gathering Place as a Jr. Intern, where the fashion of the day was over sized tee shirts tucked into very lengthy jean shorts! Upon graduating from highschool, she pursued a degree in Experimental Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. During her summers, Shelly continued her involvement with The Gathering Place, as both an intern and an employee. Six hard undergraduate years later, with her appetite for study still not curbed, combined with a deep desire to know God through His Word, she pursued biblical studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. Shelly is married to Nate and they live in Nashville, TN with their 65-lb. dog, Hudson who they unashamedly spoil. She also continues doing that which she loves most: biblical research, in this present season, for a ministry known as Going Beyond Ministries. At the end of the day, she longs for others to come to know Christ and who they are as a result of that.

It was through the spoken word of others and the written Word of God that clarified a call to ministry as a senior in high school. God has uniquely gifted Ed with an ability to connect with various age groups, personally and corporately. His communication style can be summarized as “passion with content” while seeking to inspire people to be passionate, dedicated followers of Christ. He and his wife, (College Sweetheart) Stephanie, and their four children, London, Lola, Liv, and Lawson reside in Lakeland, TN.

Equally important, they chose to stay in school, graduating together in 2007 and earning their degrees from the Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business at Belmont University. The band has been on the nations top 10 music charts and been nominated for 8 Dove Awards.
